President Obama was a few minutes ahead-of-schedule when
he landed on Wisconsin soil today - and the passionate
Chicago Bears fan received two jerseys depicting the

The Democratic president flew into Green Bay at 10:15,
and was greeted by Republican Governor Scott Walker. He
gave Obama a Packers' jersey with his name and the number
"one" on it. Also, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt gave the
president a Charles Woodson Packers' jersey with the No.
21. A reporter saw that it had signatures, but there's no
immediate word on how the president responded. Last week,
Obama said he would go to Super Bowl XLV if his hometown
Bears were to beat the Packers in last Sunday's NFC
Championship Game. And that didn't happen. Obama said he
knew he'd get ribbed after his hometown Chicago Bears
lost to the Packers last Sunday for a bid to the Super
Bowl. But Obama said he would be gracious, and wished the
Packers well in their game against Pittsburgh.
In Manitowoc today, President Obama said the U-S "fell
down on the job" while other countries strived to become
leaders in the world marketplace. The Democrat told
employees of Orion Energy Systems that America must go
"all in" and quote, "get serious about winning the
future."
The president highlighted his call for new investments in
infra-structure and innovation, which he mentioned during
last night's State-of-the-Union address. He said Orion
makes the type of solar power and energy-efficient
systems the U.S. will need to be competitive. Obama
compared the nation's current challenges to the 1950's,
when the Soviets beat the U.S. in sending a satellite
into space - and America responded by creating its space
program and all the technology that came with it.
Ironically, a 20-pound chunk of the Sputnik satellite
crashed in Manitowoc in 1962 - something Obama said he
didn't know when he chose the city for his visit. Obama
also toured two other industries in Manitowoc - an
aluminum plant that recently got a Small Business
Administration loan, and another facility that makes
high-tech windmills.The next presidential election is 650
days away - and Obama could give himself a little edge
today with his visit to Manitowoc.
The new head of the Republican National Committee,
Wisconsin's Reince Priebus, says Obama's re-election map
won't add up without the Badger State in his column. And
Priebus says we can expect to see a lot more of the
president in the state in the next 22 months. NBC White
House correspondent Chuck Todd said it's no accident that
Obama chose Wisconsin to visit to reinforce the points he
made in last night's State-of-the-Union address. Todd
said the state is quote, "probably the best petri dish of
where the Midwest is heading in 2012."
